I want to write something that doesn’t exist yet — an honest account of what the developer market in India actually looks like right now, from someone working in it every day.

Not a LinkedIn post about “exciting opportunities.” Not a fear-mongering article about “AI taking all the jobs.” Just what we’re seeing on the ground, building software for Indian clients, hiring developers, and talking to peers across the industry.

The Parts Nobody Is Saying Out Loud

The Indian IT services model — where thousands of developers do repetitive implementation work for Western companies at cost-arbitrage rates — is under serious pressure. Not collapsing, but changing in ways that matter to anyone building a career right now.

AI coding tools have meaningfully reduced the productivity gap between Indian offshore developers and developers in Western markets. When a developer in Austin using Claude + Cursor produces 3x the code in the same time, “cheap labor” becomes a less compelling value proposition.

The large Indian IT companies know this. Infosys, TCS, and Wipro are all running internal AI programs specifically to maintain margins as billing rates get squeezed. Some of this means doing the same work with fewer people. Some of this means moving up the value chain. Both things are true simultaneously.

The developer getting squeezed is the one doing work that AI can now do reasonably well — routine feature implementation, CRUD development, basic testing, documentation, code review for obvious issues. If that’s your primary skill, the market is tighter than it was two years ago.

What’s Actually Getting Better

The Indian domestic market for software is the story nobody outside India is telling. And it’s genuinely exciting.

A combination of factors is creating real demand for good software engineers working in India for Indian clients:

GST and compliance digitization pushed thousands of Indian businesses onto software for the first time. Many of them are now realizing their first-generation systems are inadequate and are looking to upgrade.

UPI and digital payments infrastructure created an entire ecosystem of fintech, logistics, and commerce software that didn’t exist five years ago. Neobanks, payment aggregators, lending platforms, and the software that connects them to businesses — all of this is being built right now, mostly by Indian developers for Indian companies.

Tier-2 and tier-3 city businesses are adopting software at a rate that would surprise people who only look at Bangalore and Hyderabad. A distributor in Jabalpur, a manufacturer in Rajkot, a hospital chain in Nashik — these businesses are hiring or contracting developers to build systems their Western counterparts built twenty years ago. The problem is almost identical; the market is enormous.

Indian SaaS is maturing. Zoho, Freshworks, Postman, BrowserStack — Indian SaaS companies are building globally competitive products. They hire well, pay well by Indian standards, and offer interesting engineering problems. These companies are growing.

The Hiring Market — What We’re Seeing

We hire developers at Softcrony and talk to other small agencies and product companies regularly. Here’s the ground truth:

Mid-level Laravel and React developers with 3–5 years of experience are genuinely hard to find. Not impossible, but harder than you’d expect given how many people are “learning to code.” The gap between people who can build tutorials and people who can build production systems is wide.

Developers who can think about the product, not just the code, command a significant premium. A developer who asks “why are we building this and how will users interact with it” before writing a line is worth substantially more than one who just implements the spec. This sounds obvious but it’s genuinely uncommon.

Communication skills are under-valued and under-developed. The ability to write a clear technical summary, explain a technical decision to a non-technical client, or run a productive requirements conversation — these skills are rare and valuable. Most developers don’t invest in them.

Remote work has made the geographic talent pool both larger and more competitive. A developer in Jabalpur can now work for a company in Bangalore or a company in London, which means they’re competing with developers everywhere.

What the Next 5 Years Look Like

This is speculation based on patterns, not prediction. Take it as a framework, not a forecast.

The commodity implementation layer shrinks. Routine coding work — building forms, CRUD APIs, basic integrations — gets partially absorbed by AI tools. Teams that needed 5 developers for this work need 2–3. This has already started.

The domestic market grows substantially. India’s software adoption curve still has a long way to run. The developers who understand Indian business contexts, Indian compliance requirements, and Indian user behavior have a specific advantage that offshore competition doesn’t.

AI skill becomes table stakes. By 2028, a developer who isn’t fluent in AI-assisted workflows will be in the position of a developer in 2010 who didn’t use version control. Not immediately unemployable but increasingly out of step.

Product thinking and domain expertise become the real differentiators. The developers who build careers — not just jobs — are those who deeply understand a domain (logistics, healthcare, fintech, manufacturing) and can translate that understanding into software decisions. AI can’t replicate domain expertise.

What Actually Works Right Now

Specific, practical things — not career advice clichés:

Build something real and ship it. The difference between a developer who has deployed a real application and one who has only done tutorials is enormous — and immediately apparent to anyone who talks to them for 10 minutes. Build something small, make it work, put it on the internet. Repeat.

Learn one domain deeply. Pick an industry that interests you — logistics, healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing — and learn how it actually works. Read about it. Talk to people in it. Build tools for it. The developer who understands trucking logistics or hospital billing or textile manufacturing at a business level is far more valuable than one who knows another framework.

Write about what you build. A technical blog, even with five posts, demonstrates communication skills, shows real work, and creates organic visibility. Most developers don’t do this. The ones who do stand out immediately.

Learn AI tools properly. Not just “use ChatGPT for code” — actually understand how to structure prompts, when to use which tools, how to verify AI output, and where AI fails. This is a skill with a significant productivity multiplier and most developers are still scratching the surface.

Work on client-facing problems. The fastest learning happens when you’re responsible for understanding what a client actually needs, not just implementing what someone else specified. Even one client project — even a small one — teaches things that years of internal projects don’t.

The Honest Bottom Line

Being a developer in India in 2026 is genuinely good if you’re willing to keep learning and to do work that goes beyond implementation. The domestic market is real and growing. The tools available to developers today are extraordinary. The ceiling on what a small, capable team can build and ship has never been higher.

It’s harder if you’re doing the same work you were doing three years ago and expecting the same results. The market is efficient at pricing work that can be automated.

The question worth sitting with is not “will AI replace me” but “what do I know and do that AI genuinely can’t?” The honest answer to that question should shape where you invest your next year of learning.
